WORM MEDICATIONS

In the Grooming Salon

As a rule, I do not recommend selling any type of internal medication for general use, and worm medications are the most common of these. Most worm medications treat only one or two  types of worm parasites and without a fecal analysis, you can  not be sure which type of worm you need to treat or if the animal  actually has worms at all.

Many owners administer worm medication routinely or when the see signs or worm problems. This causes problems in two areas.

Worm medications are actually small doses of poison.
Would you purposely poison your pet unnecessarily?

Also, many so-called signs of worms can be wrong.

Scooting, often believed to be a sure sign of pin worms is caused mainly by anal gland blockage.  Weight loss, lack of appetite and lack luster coat can have a multitude of causes and worm medications can aggravate an already poor condition or cause serious health problems. These conditions are best left to a veterinarian.

Of course, all rules have their exceptions: Flea infestations go hand-in-hand with tapeworms, which are not easily detected by normal fecal analysis tests. Tapeworms can be picked up by any animal that has fleas and are passed on when the animal ingests a flea that has crawled into its mouth or after biting at it.

Pets with tapeworms will often pass an entire worm in its stool or throw one up. Another sign is maggot type segments in the stool or passed from the anus. These segments are moist and soft when first shed, then dry, appearing like grains of rice.  When these signs are present, treatment can be administered by the owner without veterinarian advice unless the animal has medical problems.  A few bottles of tapeworm tablets in your retail area would complete your flea season needs and make your shop the only place to go for flea problems.
