Selling
Shampoo and Conditioners
In the Grooming Salon

Carrying shampoos and conditioners for home use is a controversial subject among some groomers. Many shops do not recommend their dogs be bathed between grooming because it tends to dry the coat. A few others, fearing that shampoo sales would reduce grooming income, like to see all the bathing done in the salon.

Realistically, owners do groom and bath their pets at home no matter how you feel about it. After all, they do own the animals and will do as they wish. If your customers are going to buy shampoo anyway, they might as well buy it from you.

Pet shampoo can be purchased at any supermarket or department store so you will be competing with a saturated market. Carry only top quality shampoos that will stand out against the common variety and give your customers reason to buy your shampoo instead.  Specialized shampoos with different formulas for various coat colors and textures are excellent for the salon inventory.  Although the buyer will be paying a higher price for your shampoo the benefits will be immediately apparent. If you sell your personal attention and instructions along with the product, your customers are getting a real bargain.

Try selling the same products you use in the salon. If your shampoos come in gallons only, measure shampoo out for customers on request. Containers can be supplied by the customer or you can pick up a nice selection of bottles at a nearby beauty supply   house and give mixing instructions with each purchase. Your customers will be happy they can buy the same quality shampoo that gives him the great results evident after grooming. If he doesn't get the same performance, it will be considered your personal touch that is missing, adding to your reputation as a top-notch groomer.
