PET PLANTS

Have a flare for plants? How about turning a beloved hobby into a side-line business?

Combination pets and plant stores are not uncommon and the two really go nicely together.

Plants sell for the same reason most pets do.  The customer wants something to care for, something alive and growing. People who love animals usually enjoy all living things including flowers and plants, and a beautiful plant will often be just as irresistible as the cute puppy in the pet shop window.

Pet plants is also one sideline that costs very little to start. I began by taking cuttings from my more productive plants, rooted and potted them to sell. My initial investment involved only a bag of potting soil and a few dime store pots. By visiting a few supermarkets and garden centers, I got an idea of how many the types of plants I have sell for and priced them accordingly.

Hanging plants take up no active selling area and are very popular. You can keep the cost low by making the hangers yourself out of yarn or by buying small wire hangers to attach to the pots. I have several spider plants that are wonderful baby producers and a few ivy plants that root quickly.  Once potted, they are hung from the ceiling near a sunny window with little tags attached indicating the name of the plant and the price.

Also hung near the plants is an eye-catching sign stating that these are no ordinary plants? They are "Pet Plants" that give your home warmth and joy, yet need not be walked or fed, only watered and talked to occasionally.  If you really get enthusiastic, you can give each plant its own personal name and complete each sale with adoption papers.

If you don't raise plants yourself but have a friend with a bright green thumb you can suggest she sell baby plants in you shop on consignment.

With little or no investment you can have hot sellers that decorate your shop with beauty.

Remember, your plant customers are also your pet owning customers, so do not sell any plants that would be toxic if eaten by an animal. Your dog and cat customers are your number one priority. Return that love by making sure you never handle anything harmful to them.
