Flea Products
In the Grooming Salon

What is every pet owner's worst enemy? You've guessed it - FLEAS.
These common little pests can be a boon for your business if you
handle it right. During the summer and fall months, flea treatments
and related sales increase our income 35 - 40%, and if you live in a
hot, humid climate, this increase can be carried year round.
The best way to prepare for the fleas season and be armed against
these parasites is to understand the facts. A flea has four life
stages: the egg, larvae, pupa and the adult flea.
Flea eggs are usually laid on the animal, dry and fall off to hatch
on the ground, carpet or pet's bedding. Under good conditions the
eggs will hatch in two days.
From the eggs emerge larvae. Unlike the adult flea, this worm-like
stage of the flea does not feed directly from the animal but eats dry
blood found most concentrated in the adult flea's feces.
The larva then weaves a cocoon of fiber, debris and hair in which it
develops into an adult flea. This is called the pupa stage. The
average time from egg to adult development is ten days to two weeks.
One Spot Flea Products
Today there are "one spot" flea products that control fleas
on the pet and in the environment such as Frontline and Advantage.
These have become quite popular because dog and cat owners no longer
have to spray the home and the lawn to control fleas.
The veterinary versions of these flea products work the best but for
years were only available through a veterinarian. these flea products
are now availbale for sale in the dog grooming salon.
One spot fleat products can be sold in their package or as singles
that you apply at the time of grooming.
Traditional Flea Products
The best flea control products for you to carry are those which kill
all stages of flea development, adult and pre-adult fleas. If a
product does not kill pre-adult stages, treatment will have to be
repeated in two weeks to eradicate the infestation
Flea control does not consist of treating the animals only. The
environment must be cleared at the same time the animals are treated
to prevent re-infestation. Otherwise, a ping pong effect will occur
with the home recontaminating the animals or vice versa. This means
you must carry products not only for use on the animals,
shampoos, dips and collars, but also premise pesticides such as
sprays, foggers, rug powders and lawn dusts.
Carry a full selection for all the animals you cater to and you'll
have this season's flea problem under control and a handsome profit
as reward.
