Selling
Dog Collars and Leads

In the Grooming Salon

A dog's main wardrobe is its dog collar. A few dog owners keep a variety of dog collars and leads to change as the desire or occasion dictates. Most owners look upon collars and leashes as a utility type product to be replaced only when necessary. You are in a good position to let a customer know when a collar or lead is past its prime or does not fit properly.

If the dog's collar is soiled and worn, don't put it back on the clean dog after grooming. Hand the dog collar to the customer with an explanation of how dirt and odors trapped in the dog's collar will get back on the dog. Show the owner any signs of wear and explain how a break at the wrong moment can cause serious injury or even death.

If a dog's collar is loose fitting, show the owner how easily it slips off. Follow with a story of any pet you know of that was lost. A sale of collar and lead should follow.

In the last scenario, you may also be able to sell an I.D. tag with the collar.

Dog collar sales are easy as long as you have enough inventories to offer a nice selection in different sizes, styles and collars.  Single ply nylon and jeweled vinyl collars and leads are favorites for the smaller dog, while a larger, more aggressive dog needs a wide leather or double ply nylon collar. Keep a large variety of these on your pegboard along with complimenting leads and short chains.
